Getting ready

What documents do I need for my tax return?

For most people it comes down to four things: your income slips, receipts for anything you want to claim, last year's Notice of Assessment, and your personal details including your SIN and direct deposit information. Everything past that depends on your situation — a student, a driver and a landlord each need a different handful of extras. The checklist below is sorted that way. And if you are unsure whether something counts, bring it: it takes us seconds to set aside something you did not need, and far longer to chase something you left at home.

Everyone should bring

Income slips

Most arrive by mail or through your CRA account. If some are missing, we can usually retrieve them from the CRA directly.

Receipts worth digging out

If you are self-employed or drive

If you own a rental property

If something changed this year

Life events change your return more than people expect. Tell us if you married, separated, had a baby, bought or sold a home, arrived in Canada, retired, were widowed, or received a CRA letter you did not understand. Any of these can change what you are entitled to.

What it costs. Not sure what applies to you? Our client forms walk you through it question by question, save as you type and work on your phone — and they send straight to us when you're done.

Questions we get asked

We can usually pull it directly from the CRA. As an authorized representative we can access your slips, so a missing T4 rarely holds anything up.

It helps — it carries your RRSP room and any amounts carried forward — but we can usually retrieve the information if you cannot find it.

Bring it. It takes moments to set aside something that does not apply, and far longer to chase something left at home. There is no such thing as a silly receipt.

Yes. Photograph or scan your documents and send them through our secure upload, by WhatsApp or by email. Many of our clients never come into the office.

Not very. A bag of receipts is fine — we would rather sort it ourselves than have you leave something out because it did not seem tidy enough.

Let's get it sorted.
